A Hashtag Battlefield is a communication artifact that explores the pheonomenon of hashtag hijacking and invites the user to reflect on the consumption of information on Twitter. It was developed as part of the Final Synthesis Design Studio of the Master’s Degree in Communication Design of Politecnico di Milano. You can check it here.
In 2020, hashtag hijacking drew the world’s attention and more than once made the news.
By telling the stories of three hijacked hashtags, this project invites the user to learn more about it and reflect on the impacts it might have on the consumption of information on Twitter.

The format chosen to tell the stories references famous boardgames such as Battleship and allow the user to explore the happening of a hashtag hijacking. After going through the stories, they can go to our Warning page, where we invite them to reflect on what they just saw.
